As with all films/movies, the novels or written versions of it are so much better. The amount of detail and description lost when the movie is being put together can sometimes make it lose its touch on the audience.
Little details such as the story of Teddy nearly falling off the tree until Chris saved him, How Gordons parents treated him like a ghost, etc could amplify the impact on the audience if they were included.
Some scenes or plot details are even changed, such as the relationship between Gordon and his brother, in the movie Gordons brother looked out for Gordon as much as possible though in the novella there was pretty much no relationship or the campfire fire story about the solider in the war.
Though there were some good things the film brought along, such as the scene when Gordon buys the food for the "gang" and the shopkeeper asks about his brother or the story told about "Lardass".
Nonetheless the novella was better then the movie by a mile. It added way more description and captured me with the mood it portrayed. Out of many books i have read this might be one of the better ones.

Stand By Me - My Thoughts
Stand By Me was a good movie considering the plot line was quite thin. I mean normally people in Hollywood think of an action packed thriller like Matrix or something eh? O_o? Well Stand By ME is an emotional storyline which makes it by just fine without the Boom and Bang and O_O. It kept me captured throughout the film because it was simple, it was something we ALL relate to, and something we all experience; a good time with friends =D.
All the extra little detail that went into he film made it even more capturing, the true side of Chris, the loss of Gordan's brother, the conflict between the town "gang" and the history of Teddy's Dad.
Also, the comedic feel to the movie such as the campfire story of "Lardass" or the leeches in the swamp helped it become less dry.
Altogether i would rate the movie 7.5 out of 10.
Post Note/Edit:
In the beginning of the movie when the "gang" took Gordan's hat which he had received from his brother, Gordan just stood there and took the beating.Though the kids had a gun, they didn't use it, this is the part i hated most about the movie. <(-.-)>
